One of the main reasons I began this blog is that I wanted to provide some help and encouragement for other women who have Grave's Disease, an auto-immune thyroid disorder. I was diagnosed a few years ago and could not find a single online resource written by a women who also struggled with Grave's Disease.
For those who may not know much about Grave's Disease (I didn't!), Grave's Disease is an auto-immunie disorder in which your body thinks your thyroid is an invader and attacks. This attack causes your thyroid to produce an excess of hormones, increasing your metabolism in addition to a host of other unpleasant side effects. I experienced hair loss, rapid weight loss, and sleep issues. And trust me, rapid weight loss is not as pleasant as you might think! I went into remission, and was recently diagnosed again. I'll have to take a small dose of medicine for the rest of my life to keep my thyroid from over-producing hormones again. I hope that in the future I might be able to try to go off the medicine, but I'll wait to try that until I'm done having children.
So, for now, I'm learning how to cope with an auto-immune thyroid disorder. I'll share thoughts and ideas on this blog about my journey. I look forward to hearing from you, too!
